Named after General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, who secured the Northwest Territory from European colonization during the Revolutionary War, Fort Wayne also was known as Summit City, as it was the highest point along the area waterways. Immigrants flocked to Fort Wayne during the 1800s boom years, and many inventions that are now common to contemporary life came from Fort Wayne, including street lights, the gasoline pump, the garbage disposal, magnetic wire, stereo sound, the washing machine, baking powder, the calculator, television and the juke box. Fort Wayne is the home of the National Basketball Association, and the first nighttime baseball game was played here. The largest collection of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia may be found at Fort Wayne’s Lincoln Museum, and one of the finest natural habitat animal parks in the country is the Children’s Zoo. Fort
Wayne’s Cinema Center regularly screens top-rated foreign films, the Embassy Theater hosts Broadway shows and Fort Wayne Philharmonic is well regarded throughout the Midwest. The many waterways weaving in and around the city, together with its 56 square miles of parks, also make Fort Wayne one of the more desirable outdoor recreation destinations in the country.
